We had a great turn out for fall retreat. The weather did not cooperate as nicely as in years past, but we stayed inside and enjoyed the most incredible worship by Gary Keith. Thank you Terry Hatfield for accompaning him on your guitar as well. The fellowship, networking, and workshops were all strongly accepted. We had several new people present. I hope they will visit our monthly meetings. We are very fortunate to have so many gifted writers among us. Please be praying for future events to be just a worthwhile and exciting to our local writers so that will be ignited with passion to write with zeal and fervor for the Lord. Big thank yous to all our workshop leaders: Nick Nixon, Tracy Crump, Doyne Phillips, and Gary Fearon.

In January, I met with a few of our core members who have consistantly shown interest and been present at several meetings. These members have graciously accepted an invitation to serve as Board members for Bartlett Christian Writers.
Londa “Suzy” Hayden – President – Leads all meetings. Coordinates all upcoming events and activities with the assistance of Board members. Provides goals and agendas for special events. Provides all materials needed for all special events with the assistance of Board members.
Annie Hooks – Vice President – will assist the president in all organizational matters and special events, and will take over duties for the president whenever she cannot be present. Such duties can and will be deferred to all other board members should the VP not be able to attend the meeting or event.
Vickie Keith – Secretary/Chapbook Coordinator – will help record BCW activities during meetings and special events. Also, Vickie is the main organizer for all chapbook projects. This position will also give her the authority to lead monthly meetings in the absence of the President and VP.
Bonnie Harker – Treasurer – will simply help keep track of donations, help organize, and provide accountability with any and all funds coming in on a monthly basis with the help of Suzy Hayden when or if she can't be present to do so herself. She also has authority to lead monthly meetings should the need arise.
Jeri McBryd – Special Incentives Program Coordinator – will encourage and keep track of any and all submissions sent in by writers, including chapbook submissions, and provide reward incentives for each effort. Also, has the authority to lead monthly meetings if/when necessary.
Terry Hatfield – General Overseer (Emeritus) - For accountability purposes only and lead meetings if/when necessary.
Please welcome our new Board members. I applaud them for their efforts in serving our local community of writers.
Cynthia Elliott was our special speaker for January. She offered so much good and useful information that our members who were present requested she return. Therefore, Cynthia will return for our March 9th meeting and continuing with Part II on "The How-To's in Tax Season for Writers."
Don't miss our very own Jeri McBryde, who will be leading our February 9th meeting and teaching "On Writing Romance."

This year has a been an exciting one in which I believe the Bartlett Christian Writers has made strides in learning our craft. Although, we only got to meet 10 months out of the twelve, I still feel we were able to accomplish a few goals. Some of us got our work contracted and published, while others actually started writing down their stories for the first time and submitted them to the chapbook projects for a first time publication effort.
In January, I will be sharing our goals for 2013. We will also have a special guest, Cynthia Elliott, CPA and Author, who will be speaking about how tax season works for the writer. This year, I hope to pull together a small group of people to actually create a board and discuss new policies for the group. We will also be placing less emphasis on special speakers and concentrating more in the area of honing our craft.
The Christmas brunch was a blast and everyone had so much fun. I am sharing one picture with you here just for grins and fond memories.

Well I skipped a lot of months here, but things get busy in life. If you will move on over to the photo galery, you can see photos of special events we've been involved with this year. We have our annual workshop in July and our annual Christian Writers Retreat every October. There are some great photos of each of those events. You can get a glimpse of the beautiful amphitheater at the Decatur Trinity Christian Church and see why I always love using their facility for the retreat. The grounds are so lovely and the weather is always good at that time of year.
We have a special guest set up for December 8th. Loretta McNary is a TV Talks Show Host here in Memphis who has written her first book. She will be sharing about her book and offering a signing during our annual Christmas party.
During the past 3 years, I have diligently served our community of writers with special events and plan to continue to do so in the future. However, in 2013, I feel the Lord is leading me to scale back on special speakers and concentrate more on writing technique and development. We will have a few special speakers for special events only, but mostly, we will be working on our writing skills and towards getting a group anothology published. I will post more on this subject come the first of year.

Many of us shared poems and other writings for positive feedback. Some of these will be included in our next chapbook project, Vol. III. Suzy led a short discussion on the basics of poetry, which reviewed the different kinds of meter with number of feet, stressed and unstressed words or syllables, and the acceptable patterns and formats. Authors were encouraged to revise and edit their pieces before our chapbook project final submission date on April 14th. Submission guidelines are on the home page of this website.

Our January meeting brought in seven or eight new members and visitors. We had about 18 people in all, which is way more than I ever expected for a January meeting. Tracy Crump offered a presentation on "Writers Rights." She offered her insight and knowledge about negotiating your rights in a contract with a publisher. It was very informative and helpful.
Kudos to Jeri McBryde - For her fifth work being accepted by Chicken Soup for the Soul. She has two more pieces coming out this year Chicken Soup for the Soul publications.
Kudos to "Suzy" Londa Hayden - For her blog entry in Southern Writers Magazine, Suite T Blog. Suzy also has published a new ebook on Smashwords.com. The Writer's Anointing offers encouraging insight to writers to help them walk in the anointing God has given them.

Whoa! So sorry to be so late in posting here. It's been months, but we've been a very busy group. Since last May, we have held our 2nd workshop "From Self-Editing to Self-Publishing" with Bradley Harris and Susan Riechert, and our 2nd writers retreat. We had the Faith Editor for the Commercial Appeal come speak with us about his journey in writing. September was our quarterly brunch with a presentation from our newest member, Matthew Bryan about his book "Desperation." We had a busy month in October as we participated in the Barltett Festival and BookStock at the Central library on the same day to promote our group and books. We followed that up with our annual retreat the following weekend. November was a laid back month offering writing exercises and reviewing what we had learned from the workshop.
Our Christmas brunch was a lot of fun as we mingled and enjoyed a beautfful Christmas song by Greta Rich. Diane McNeil talked about her study on the book of Ruth and how God immersed her into the Jewish culture in Memphis to give her revelation knowledge to share with the world. We also played a gift exchange game. Everyone left with a gift or two. Thanks to Pam Stein for taking photographs. I will share them here on the site as soon as she sends them to me. Just wanted to share some happy feedback with everyone from a new member.
Thank you for hosting the wonderful Christmas party we had yesterday. The food was good, the fellowship was great and I thoroughly enjoyed our guest speaker. The gift I got was nice too, just what I wanted. The whole event was a big success. I hope you and your family's Christmas is as nice as the one we had there. I'm already looking forward to our next meeting and plan to be there with a hungry mind. Take care of yourself and have a Merry Christmas.

Our May meeting was awesome with Bryan Davis sharing very moving and inspiring stories of how God directed and guided him in his writing career. Bryan has been operating by faith since before he first got published and God has blessed him above and beyond what he ever expected. He was a blessing to be around and I personally felt honored to be in his presence. He offered a lot of practical information for other writers to develop their own literary careers, and helpful ideas for others who work on a part time basis only. The group took up a love offering as an honorarium to help Bryan out with his expenses. He lives an hour and a half drive away. We are grateful that he took the time to share his expertise and knowledge with our writers group. Both March and April meetings were a whirlwind of success.
In March, we learned marketing techniques and strategies for how to sell and plug our books from Marketing Guru, Sharen Rooks.
In April, Bradley Harris gave us a great presentation on how to work with an editor, which is something you definitely want to know how to do before you publish anything. Bradley was very generous with his time and in sharing his expertise by offering an extensive handout to each participant. He graciously answered our questions and extended a free hour of editing to each of us who attended. We are excited that Bradley will be joining us again in July for our workshop.
